To this joy, it seemed that all his life and unlife been but prelude.

He hid his elation behind sarcasm, the manly business of list-making, and mild insults he didn't really mean. He'd learned long ago that birds couldn't abide a wet bloke.

And there was the Watcher to consider -- although he'd had a brief sentimental moment, he refused to go soppy in front of his girl's honorary Da.

Still, it was all he could to do not to go around grinning like a fool. This glorious creature, this golden nymph, had consented to be his bride.

Then she'd curled up in his lap, sweet as you please, given him kisses and hinted she'd like to give him more. And he, he'd gladly give in return -- she was a tidy treat, and no mistake.

He grumbled a bit at their excursion -- surely, on this day of all days, they were entitled to tarry in their betrothal bower? Oh, that was good, he'd have to write that down.

Demons to fight, and he was forced to acknowledge that his lovely flower was... a bit on the violent side. And feisty. Couldn't she see that he wanted to protect her? She was the best thing that had ever happened to him. He couldn't lose her.

But unlike his previous loves, she was a warrior, and she did not need his help. She, instead, came to his rescue. She was Valkyrie, she was Athena, she was the Slayer.

Oh, sweet passion, sweeping aside everything in its path. No care for the demons beating at the doors or threatening her mates.

The only thing in the world was her mouth on his, fierce, demanding. He delighted to be hers.

Exultation, and -- what?

Slayer. Slayer? He was kissing the Slayer...

And she was repulsed by him.

Lost, his blushing bride.

His love lived, but her love was dead.
