Prompt: Shiver and Shake, that Demon's a Snake (angst)

Prompt:  Shiver and Shake, that Demon's a Snake
Setting:  Summer, just after the end of S4
Rating: PG
Words: 190

Buffy’s fought snake demons before. There was that demon she and Cordelia had nearly been sacrificed to at that party, and the snake-thing that had been eating all the puppies at the pound, and who could forget Mayor I-Wanna-Be-a-Giant-Snake Wilkins?

But Spike is the snakiest of them all. An evil, lying, betraying, snake in the grass.

She should have expected it, really. Spike risking his neck to help her with Adam? Made no sense. Buffy had gotten complacent, thinking Spike was, if not on their side, and least not actively out to kill them anymore. She had the bad habit of not seeing people (or demons) for what they really were, or wanting so hard to believe there had to still be some spark of goodness in the midst of all that evil that she fooled herself into thinking she had seen something there. Something that, in Spike’s case, really didn’t exist.

Soulless vampires were evil, through and through. You’d think she would know better, after Angelus.

Buffy slips a pair of stakes into her pocket, and heads for Spike’s crypt.

She won’t be making the same mistake again.
