It was so quiet. The only sound that floated across the dead was the mistimed drumming of Buffy’s boots on the worn tombstone she sat on. Not even a breeze. It was sort of nice, after the absolute hell that had been the last few weeks of her life.
Willow was safely tucked away with the coven in England, hopefully becoming unaddicted or whatever the term is, to magic. Dawn was still floating on their new understanding and Buffy was kinda pleased with that too. It had been a surprise to watch how well her sister had handled herself in the underground tomb. She’d grown up while Buffy had been struggling to come back to life.
Xander and Anya seem to be coming to some sort of understanding which was of the good. Especially since it kept Xander busy enough to not be such a pain about Spike. She cringed at the thought of her former… lover? He’d probably say fuck buddy and if she was being honest with herself, it’s about all she’d allowed him.
What surprised her, was how much it had hurt her, still hurt her, at what he’d done. She’d trusted him, without even realising it, to never hurt her. All those times he’s simply taken her abuse. He’d never hit back. Then he had. When she was at her lowest, vulnerable because she’d let her defences down around him.
Of course she should never have relaxed. He was a vampire and he was the embodiment of chaos. Even when he was trying to help. He couldn’t help it. It’s what he was. If not evil, then the very least he was chaos.
Suddenly, the silence became oppressive. She needed some action. Things had been so quiet lately and she was action girl after all. Where was a vampire that need a good staking when you needed one? She jumped down from Mrs Frick’s headstone and stalked further into the cemetery. Maybe Clem had some news for her…
