Prompt: Who’s Minding the Monster? (angst)

When she looks at him, she can see something shining out of his eyes. It’s not a soul—that’s heavier than anything. That she can see in the way he moves and speaks, careful, braced, like he’s in danger of breaking something at any moment (and he is). It’s not the ghosts inside of him—those are dim, soul-pulling. Those she can see when he stares at one spot a little too long or takes a little too long to answer, and those little too longs speckle his behaviour so he’s always just a little too off. No, the shine, like a film of tears though it isn’t that either, is the monster peeking out, which is what’s really looking at her because the soul is so heavy it is immobile.

The monster sat beside her on the steps with a gun laid beside it and a hand on her back. It bled on a slab from Glory’s special brand of torture and bled quiet disbelief when she let it back into her house, and was always bleeding love. And it was in the bathroom the day Tara died, trying to… The monster is the face of a cliff.

She thinks about the monster and how it stood at the bottom of the stairs and looked at her, and she saw something almost heavy in its eyes.
