“Buffy… I..”

“Not now, Giles.” She sighed, a long half silent intake of air, which choked on the pain in her side, making her screw her face up in more than loss. “Maybe not ever.”

“I couldn’t see it. So long in the Council… simply unheard of…” He held his glasses stiffly in his hands and she looked up into his face, saw every year that he’d lived written there, saw her own tired and lost look reflected in his eyes.

“Giles, please. He doesn’t deserve this. We don’t deserve this. Let it go, now. He’s a hero and he saved the world for us. Surely that’s worth more than all the Council ever spent on you.”
