Prompt: The Dinosaur Deception (fluff)
Prompt: The Dinosaur Deception
Setting: S6 (possibly AU S6)
Rating: PG
Words: 470
Buffy looks over at the dinosaur head that has rolled to a stop next to the museum wall, and then back down at the rest of the dinosaur body beneath her - the dinosaur body with a man’s head poking out of where the dinosaur’s head had attached only seconds earlier.
“A - a costume? Really? What is this, a Scooby-Doo episode? Are you pretending to be a scary monster for some nefarious get-rich scheme?”
“And he would’ve gotten away with it too, if it wasn’t for us meddling kids,” Xander says.
“It was just a quick way to earn some dosh, all right?, Spike says sourly. “Some bloke hired me to do it, didn’t tell me why.”
Buffy is trying really hard not to laugh. She climbs off of Spike, and turns to Xander. “I think I can take it from here,” she says, trying to sound firm and in control. She needs Xander to believe she’s about to give Spike a dressing down, not… an undressing.
No. No undressing of the evil dead. No matter how ridiculously cute he looks right now, all rumple-haired and trying for penitent but failing miserably.
Xander picks up the (thankfully scaled down) T-Rex head, and puts his finger to one of the teeth. “Ouch! These are sharp!” He glared at Spike, sucking on his finger. “Somebody fangless felt the need to overcompensate, I guess.”
Spike makes a rude gesture, and Xander makes a face back. “You sure you can handle him, Buff?”
Buffy gives him a Look.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll leave you to it. Make sure to punch him a good one for me.”
When Xander’s gone, Buffy offers Spike her hand and, with a roll of her eyes, says, “Lame.”
“Yeah, well. Money’s money, Slayer.”
“What do you even need money for?”
Spike looks everywhere but at her, then puts on his most ‘I’m the Big Bad, so what’s it to you?’ face. “Things, all right?”
Buffy steps closer, as close as she can with the ridiculous costume between them. “Things?” she says, letting her voice go soft. She knows he’s seen Dawn’s Christmas list. He’s also been around for some of Buffy’s more spectacular wigs over how to pay for the things on Dawn’s list.
“Things,” he says. “Look, I’m not stealing. Not even doing anything wrong, really. Just scaring the unsuspecting populace. And this way you can…”
Buffy cuts him off with a kiss to the cheek. “Sometimes, you’re almost sweet. Morally clueless, but sweet.”
Spike stares at her. “You’re not mad?”
She’s not mad, exactly. Not even disappointed, really. Buffy’s not sure what she is. She just knows she can’t be mad at somebody for screwing up when they’re actually trying really hard to do the right thing, against all odds. “Come on, you big dummy. Let’s get you out of this thing.”
