Title: Mood Ring
Rating: G
Setting: S8
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: death cap (Enslave Soul)
Note: Sequel to The Blood is the Life, The Five Sisters Zoo, and White Billowing Smoke
Note: Linking to it at AO3 because LJ is massively annoying with paragraph breaks from an Open Office document.

Title: Dinner, No Movie
Rating: G
Setting: Post series
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: bloodroot; I used the Bloodroot Restaurant in Bridgeport, CN
Note: Having never been, I may have gotten details wrong. Actually I almost certainly have gotten details wrong.
Note: Not posting to LJ because here I have to fix each paragraph to prevent them from all running into each other, which makes the story hard to read. I don't mind doing that for a shorter story, but I'm not doing it for one with as many paragraphs as this one has.

Title: White Billowing Smoke
Rating: G
Setting: S8
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: snake venom (Blood Sacrifice)
Note: I'm not sure snakes use up their venom when they bite. It seems like something I learned once but perhaps, like the Golux, I'm just good at making believable things up.
Note: And I'm using ingredients from the other teams' spells just to be evil. So there.
Note: Apparently I've also stolen the whole “Willow's magic messes up” meme from another team. Sorry, but in the previous story I had Buffy worrying about it and so I felt I had to follow through. Tell you what. You may glare at me for as long as you like and I won't even try to fight back.
Note: Sequel to The Blood is the Life and The Five Sisters Zoo

Willow's spell, as enhanced by the Devonshire coven, was taking forever. Buffy supposed that was good – maybe that meant it was safer – but she was bored. She looked down at her arm. At least the swelling was going down. Stupid adder. She'd dropped it after it had bitten her and taken the other instead, which had turned out to be a good idea. Who knew that snakes used up their venom when they bit?

Finally Willow was bringing out the dragon's blood, which was really a nice smelling incense and not blood at all. When she added the dragon's blood, white smoke billowed up, but Willow didn't look upset so maybe she expected that to happen. Willow picked up the smoking potion. She'd told them she had to circle Spike six times. The smoke kept billowing out. Xander started choking a minute or two before Buffy did. She tried waving her hand to move some of the smoke away. Didn't work. Buffy didn't worry too much – Willow had seemed unconcerned after all – until she heard Willow's voice. “Um, Buffy?”

Title: The Five Sisters Zoo
Rating: G
Setting: S8
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: toad legs (Enslave Soul)
Note: The Five Sisters Zoo had a fire, last April I think, that burned down the reptile house. I don't know if it ever had an adder or not.
Note: Sequel to The Blood is the Life

Buffy stared across the road to where the trees lined the fence. She could see that in the summer the leaves might obscure the fence a bit and give the zoo a more natural feel, but in the middle of winter the leafless branches provided absolutely no cover. “It's dark,” she said.

After she'd stood there without moving for five minutes, Xander had gotten out of the car to stand, shivering, next to her. “Of course it's dark. It's, oh, about 3 A. M. It's also freezing. Could we get this done with so we can get back to our drafty and much warmer than I'd ever realized castle?”

“We're around the back.”

"That's because we're breaking in,” Xander replied. “Well, you'll be breaking in and I'll be jumping back into the nice and toasty car as soon as you start with the breaking in. Most people, when they're breaking into a zoo – or into much of anything really – don't go through the front entrance.”

"It's bigger than I thought.”

"Buffy, you've got the map. You've had the whole drive up here to study it.” Xander pulled his hands out from under his arms to grab the map and spread it out. “See. Five Sisters Zoo. All that space. You knew it was big, but the Reptile Building is clearly marked. All you have to do is go in, get an adder, and get out.”

"I don't know where I'm going in.”

Xander glared at her.

"Well, I don't. What if I go in through this big bear area?”

"Buffy, it's delightful, got a waterfall and everything.”

Buffy glared back.

“Buf, you've fought a bear before and besides, it's winter. Don't bears hibernate? They'll probably all be asleep.”

“It's the probably that's bugging me.”

“No it isn't,” Xander said.

“What?”

“It isn't that it's dark, or that we're behind the zoo, or the bears. What's really bugging you?”

“Willow should be here,” Buffy said with a shrug. “If she were here she could just get the venom and we could leave the snake.”

“Willow is busy chopping up toad legs for this Spike restoring spell You know how Willow feels about toads. I mean, they aren't frogs, exactly, but they look a lot alike so she's got to be big with the wigging right about now. Almost as big with the wigging as you are. What's really wrong? Come on, spill.”

Buffy folded her arms, leaned back against the car, and tilted her head as she looked over toward Xander. “What if it doesn't work?”

With a relieved smile Xander handed the map back to Buffy. “Come on, Buf. When has Willow ever let you down?” After a pause he rushed on, “Okay, bad example, but she's big with the witchy mojo nowadays. She knows what she's doing, and she's run it past the Devonshire coven. They are super careful with the magic. It'll work. You'll get Spike back, although what you want with him … ”

Buffy grinned and punched at Xander's arm.

"And can I say ow?”

"Sorry.” Buffy took another look at the map and picked up the box for the adder. “What if the snake freezes on the way back to the car?”

"Buffy.”

“Yeah, okay.” Buffy set off for the fence.

Title: That I Might, With Thee, Fade Away
Rating: G
Setting: post S5
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: funeral shroud
Note: Remix of Funeral by A Gentleman of Leisure
Note: the lines Spike speaks are from Keats' “Ode to a Nightingale”

Spike wasn't at the funeral proper. The boy, taking the time to find him alone, had told Spike he wasn't invited. We'll do a spell, to keep the grave safe, if we have to. Cheeky git. Spike had wanted to rip the boy's throat out, chip or no chip, but had settled for giving his head, his own head, a quick shake. He'd been afraid a larger move would have had him lunging at the boy and Buffy wouldn't have wanted that.

He followed them to the grave site. It wasn't easy, getting about during the day, but the clouds had rolled in. A bit of luck, that, for him at least. He'd never have found the grave on his own – the witch had hidden it too well – although perhaps Tara would have taken pity on him and shown him where it was. Spike wasn't about to depend on anyone's pity.

Giles said some words. Xander and Willow stood on either side of Dawn. Tara and Anya were there too, although standing a bit back. He was the only one who'd been uninvited. Watchers and witches and mean-hearted little boys and ex-demons, they were all good enough to stand by Buffy's grave, but not Spike. That was okay. He'd get his chance. He'd rather have her to himself anyway. Maybe the little bit would be alright, as company, or possibly Tara, but no one else.

They all cried. Spike didn't. What he felt was too big for tears. A shroud of rain came through and drove them all away. It was getting close to sunset by then anyway. They wouldn't have stayed, not after dark, not without her to protect them. The rain was so heavy it obscured the grave, making it seem, almost, as if it weren't there. Not quite though. Buffy's death was something he'd never forget. The rain was heavy enough that nobody could have seen the tears, if anyone had been there, but still Spike didn't cry.

He stayed there through the night. The dawn was only a few minutes away before he left her side. The rain had stopped hours earlier, but he was soaked to the skin. He didn't notice. He traced his fingers over the tombstone and spoke for the first time since he'd stepped into the grove. “That I might drink, and leave the world unseen, And with thee fade away.” He bowed his head as if in prayer and then spoke again, the words of his final vow. “I'll make sure the little bit is safe. I'll keep my vow.” It was the only thing he could still give her.

Title: And Would You Drink Poison For Me?
Rating: G
Setting: S8
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: hemlock

Dru, who had been pouting all night, squirmed as Spike wrapped her in his arms. “Come on, luv. Tell me what's wrong.”

She pulled away and ran into the waves. Her feet were bare and her dress soaked up to the knees. “No,” she called back. “You're going to drink hemlock for her. You never drank poison for me.”

"Come back in, pet, and we'll find some poison before the sun rises. I'll drink as much as you want.”

“The little death was mine, but the pyre, the sacrifice, the burning flame, that's hers.”

“Flame? I thought you said I drank … .” Spike rubbed a hand through his hair. “Fire and water, that it? Is this more of that alchemical nonsense?”

“Fire and water. You and me. You shall burn and I? Drown in the sea, where fishies will eat me and guard me from flame.” She fell backward into the waves and Spike squatted down to wait, hoping she'd come back out before the sun rose. He didn't fancy having to drag her back to the house.

Title: It Can't Be Love
Rating: PG for language
Setting: S7
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: deadly nightshade

Buffy read the label on the jar. “Nightshade. Isn't that like a tomato?”

Anya grabbed the jar from Buffy and put it back into her kitchen shelf. Leading Buffy to the mortar and pestle on the counter, Anya said, “Here, use up some of that energy. You can grind up the herbs.” Buffy took a sniff at the herbs, made a face, and started grinding. “And yes, tomatoes are part of the nightshade family, but they're not poisonous.”

Buffy stopped grinding. “Poisonous? This is poisonous?”

“Look,” Anya snapped, “it's not an exact science, alright? The potency of the herb depends on when it was picked and how it was processed. Honestly? It shouldn't even kill a human much less a Slayer, but you never know. If you want something else, go tell your best friends that you're in love with Spike.”

"I'm not in love with Spike. It's a spell. It has to be a spell.”

"Yeah, whatever,” Anya replied with a roll of her eyes. “Because Heaven forfend demons could be loveable, worthy of love, whatever.”

"Anya, I didn't mean … “

"Just don't. Okay. I'll help you do your spell and I won't tell Xander or Willow about your loving Spike, but I don't need your condescension right now.” Buffy shut up and let Anya finish the spell.

After drinking down the potion, Buffy stretched out on the couch. She found herself in a thicket, surrounded by plants, ivy or something, ivy with thorns, hacking her way through. As the thorns cut into her skin, Buffy redoubled her hacking. When she broke through to an open space it was to find Spike sitting on her sofa with his feet on the coffee table but out in the middle of a meadow. He smiled up at her. “Luv.”

Waking up in Anya's apartment was a real letdown. “So, do you love him?” Buffy heard a magazine rattle. “Not that I care.”

Buffy didn't remember much of her vision, just sitting with Spike, arms wrapped around each other, not even kissing, just basking in each others love.

She did love Spike.

Shit.

Title: The Blood is the Life
Rating: G
Setting: S8
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: human blood
Note: And wouldn't Spike hate me using a line from Dracula in his story. ;-)

Spike had walked up to the castle, through the waist high snow, only a couple of hours before the dawn. The Slayer's guarding on the night shift had almost killed him before one realized who he was.

Now he was laid out on one of the beds, in the room next to Buffy's. The shifting of bedrooms had caused some grumbling but Buffy didn't care. “What's wrong with him?” Buffy demanded before Willow had come fully out of her spell.

“Nothing,” Willow said, sounding defensive.

“There has to be something. Look at him.” Spike hadn't moved in the three hours since he'd passed out just outside their gates. Granted he was dead, technically, which meant he didn't, well, twitch, but still. He should have woken up or … or something.

"It's not a spell. Magical sight isn't showing anything. I think he's just exhausted.”“

"Why isn't he waking up? He must need something.”

"I think blood maybe. Human blood.”

"Fine. Tell Xander to send a squad. Nearest blood bank. Make it quick.”

"Buffy?”

Buffy wrapped her arms around herself. “I can't lose him again.”

Title: A Funeral in Her Heart
Rating: G
Setting: B4
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: human blood

Buffy stepped into the bathroom as quietly as only a Slayer could. Spike, chained in the tub, still had that pale blue bit of blanket wrapped around himself. He wasn't breathing, his skin was as pale as death, and his cheeks so sunken-in he looked half-way to concentration camp victim. The blanket, wrapped around him like that, reminded her of a shroud. She ripped the blanket off him, getting it caught in the chains. He woke as she was trying to tug it away. “Hey! Hey, Slayer. What the bloody hell are you doing? Bathtub's cold enough without you running off with my only blanket.”

Buffy dropped the blanket. “I … You looked dead.”

With a frown Spike said, “I am dead.” He tugged at the blanket. “You've gotten it all tangled in the chains. Thanks a lot, Slayer.”

“Sorry,” Buffy said. She couldn't get the image of Spike, dead but not ash, out of her mind. “You look like you could use more blood?”

Spike looked wary. “Wouldn't say no.”

“I'll go heat some up.”

Buffy brought him the blood but didn't stay to watch him drink. She couldn't stand to see him so ill. Instead she raced off to the hospital to steal him some human blood. She couldn't figure out why she cared whether Spike of all people, or um vamps, lived or died, but she did.

Fic: Spell Components

Title: Spell Components
Rating: G
Setting: late B8 or early B9 in San Francisco
Summary/Prompt: Written for the 2013 Halloween Challenge over at SB Fag Ends. Lacrimosa's The Way of the Shadow: black cat's bone
Note: I'm finding I'm not sure what counts as Spuffy. I was going for the idea that Spike saved the cats because he cares for Buffy and figured she wouldn't want them hurt.
Note: In looking up the names of Buffy's roommates, I found out that there are Slayers who are still on team Buffy. My library stopped getting the comics early in S9 so I'm not up-to-date on this stuff.

Buffy shut the door quickly before any of the cats could escape. “Why are we suddenly wall-to-wall with black cats?”

Anaheed and Tumble were looking a bit grouchy, although Buffy thought Anaheed might be hiding a grin. Spike, and how had he gotten into her apartment, was showing and out-and-out smirk. “Saved 'em, didn't I? Guy was gonna sell them as spell components for their bones and other bits. I knew you wouldn't like it.” His look grew momentarily intense as is this was supposed to mean something to her. Then, just as quickly he shrugged it off. “I challenged him to a bit of poker.”

“One, I thought that was kittens and two, ewww.”

“People play poker with kittens?” Tumble asked.

“Yeah, could we not go there?" Turning to Spike Buffy added, "We can't keep the cats.”

Spike shrugged. “Put 'em out on the streets they'll just get caught again.”

There was a knock on the door and Dawn pushed her way in. “Oooh, kitties.”

“I thought niblet might take some,” Spike added.

Dawn dropped to the floor and, within a minute, had four cats in her arms.

“Xander is so gonna kill me,” Buffy moaned.
